On our Radar

Amani Burnham doesn’t play blues-rock like someone trying to recreate the past. He plays it like he’s dragging it into the future.

Seventy years after Muddy Waters first recorded “Hoochie Coochie Man,” the 20-year-old guitarist posted a performance of the blues classic online and instantly caught attention far beyond social media algorithms. Armed with a white Fender Stratocaster and a style that feels equal parts Hendrix fire, Stevie Ray Vaughan grit and modern instinct, Burnham made the song sound dangerous again.

What started as a spontaneous post quickly became something bigger. His fluid soloing, raw stage presence and unmistakable touch on the guitar resonated with both younger listeners and longtime blues fans. Since late 2023, Amani has built an audience of more than 240,000 followers and nearly 30 million views across Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.

But behind the viral clips is a musician with a deeper vision.

Born in Ethiopia and raised in Connecticut, Burnham developed his sound through classic blues, rock and soul records while shaping a technique entirely his own. Instead of using a pick, he plays with his right-hand thumb, creating an aggressive yet fluid style filled with syncopated riffs, expressive bends and explosive lead runs.

Now, Amani is stepping out from behind the screen with his debut album *Roots & Wings*, arriving via Blind Pig Records. Recorded at the legendary Carriage House Studios with a stripped-back power trio setup, the record blends cosmic blues-rock solos, soulful vocals and introspective songwriting into something that feels timeless without sounding nostalgic.

Tracks like “Fastlane” showcase his electrifying guitar work, while the title track reflects on identity, heritage and his Ethiopian roots. Throughout the album, Burnham honors the lineage of blues-rock while refusing to treat it like museum music.

“Blues, like nature, has to keep evolving,” Amani says. “You can trace heavy metal, prog rock, grunge, everything, back to it. I want to be a part of that evolution.”

And that’s exactly what makes Amani Burnham exciting right now. He isn’t reviving blues-rock.

He’s rewriting its future.
